This article has exerts from several architects, with their opinion on model making and it's usefulness in bringing a design further. I found all of the things they said were valid, however these were the ones I felt had the most impact:
1. Agatham Co. believe that models of not just the final building, but various small aspects of it, are vital to the exploration of the design. However despite this, the model is not the end product and should not be considered so. It should be used as a tool to bring the design to a new level.
2. Cindy Renderly Architexture stresses the importance of 3D models in their ease at adjustment. "I can manipulate card and paper freely to show options to clients, if necessary." Rather than a sketch, the immediate effect of these changes on the design can be seen if modeled in 3D.
3. Having previously seen work by Julio Barreno, I was interested in his idea that "an architect must be an explorer not a tourist guide" - as they need to explore interesting new places. He looks for his design ideas in a variety of objects, such as string and paper clips, in order to find something truly "new" in architecture.
