Unfortunately, the methylated spirits and turpentine had no effect on wood, so I decided to emulate a weathered effect by using expanding foam as a material. I spray painted it black, as the effect when it was white was quite plain and didn't highlight the different chasms and "eaten" in/chemically eroded spots I was most interested in. This is a photo of part of the model:
And these are some photos (close-up) of the "eroded" parts I thought were most interesting, and will hopefully inform my design in a new and creative way:
