Development of form

Rather than the outline of the lichen itself, I thought it would be more appropriate to use the outline of the moss against the stone. I traced the image, noting it's general shape and then transferred that manually into illustrator:

At the same time, I was concentrating on the manipulations of cork I'd done previously, wondering how it could come together as the roof to the above (^) wall. I utilized a variation on the last form I made, with the following results:

I had an idea about how these folded cork strips could be used as a roof, with an oculus like form in the middle, connected by other strips of cork. In this way, I could also incorporate the line engravings that I really liked from my lazer cuttng experiments. In order to figure out how these strips would come together, I printed out the plan view (as inspired by the lichen) and using plain white paper, I bent strips and placed them on the plan (which in reality would be a wall) in order to correctly ascertain how they would relate to each other on such an organic based form. This was the result:

I really like how this turned out, it appears lightweight and almost like it "grows" inwards, growing towards the centre point. Also, the layering and folding of the cork gives it extra dimension, as well as allowing for all kinds of interesting shadows and lights to be cast. I took photos to see how this form would look like from different angles.
