Lazer cutting as a mold

Mould? Mold? Excellent.

I decided to try an experiment in using the lazer cutter as a mold, rather than the final tool. I was originally going to have stairs (descending to the heart of the architecture, where the stop is located) however, rather than the plan stacking-of-wood parts, I thought it would be interesting to use these as a tool to create the stairs out of expanding foam, likening them to the lichen and moss growths that influenced my design. I did some experiments with various ways to shape the foam:





I decided the best result was from just lightly pressing the material against the foam, then slowly removing it. I made a crude paper model of how the mold would look like (a negative print though, as the foam would be applied from underneath):


Here are the stairs currently being "illustrated", figuring out how the tools work so that my measurements are precise:
