ReplyDeleteI peer reviewed Marina for this project. I feel Marina's real strength with this design has been the highly in depth process which resulted in a strong final solution. The recognition that starting in the park was too predictable added a more dynamic element to her base idea of parents providing emotional and physical sustenance which lead to the concept of family dinners and thus picnics. This development of ideas even at an early phase in the design process was really interesting and I feel had a positive influence on her final design. I liked her initial idea which really supported the sustenance principle. The experimentation with texture really strengthened the base concept and I thought it was an interesting way to think about reflecting her ideas. I liked the location of her site which involved quite a structural, concrete based area. While this contradicted Marina's idea, it was this juxtaposition that made the project dynamic. The final design was a dining area scripted so as separate "seats" can more around, reflecting concepts of "together vs. separate" and "chaos vs order." One criticism would be that the space is slightly overwhelming due to the strange flashing of the pattern. I thought that perhaps this took away from the pattern slightly and favoured the chaos.
Overall I feel this is a very strong project which followed an extensive process, displayed here in this blog. The final solution is clearly developed and refined but still captures the basis of the core idea and Marina's interpretation of sustenance.
